RAINBOW MOUNTAIN TOUR AND MACHUPICCHU TOUR BY TRAIN

Visiting the Rainbow Mountain tour and the Machu Picchu citadel by train are undoubtedly must-see destinations on your travel route to Peru. The Rainbow Mountain tour, also known as Vinincunca or the Mountain of Seven Colors, is, after Machu Picchu, one of the most popular destinations. It is considered a natural treasure due to the spectacular variety of colors that adorn its slopes, caused by the combination of minerals over thousands of years. A visit to this mountain offers every adventurer and nature lover a unique experience.

On the other hand, the Machu Picchu tour by train is an opportunity to get a closer look at Inca history and culture. The majesty of the Machu Picchu citadel lies in its location on top of a mountain, surrounded by the vegetation of the Cusco jungle. The architecture, agricultural terraces, and perfectly carved stones are testimonies to the skill of the Inca culture. The Machu Picchu tour is more than just visiting an archaeological site; it is a place that evokes awe and reflection. The combination of its natural beauty and rich history makes it an incomparable destination for travelers seeking a enriching experience.

Itinerary

ITINERARY:

DAY 1: RAINBOW MOUNTAIN TOUR

We will pick you up early in the morning from your hotel in Cusco (04:00 AM). Then, we will head to the southern valley of Cusco in our tourist transportation, accompanied by our guide and the rest of the tour group. The journey takes approximately 2 hours, and our first stop will be at the village of Cusipata, where we can have breakfast. Once breakfast is finished, we will continue our journey for another hour until we reach the end of the road. Here, our guide will provide us with some instructions and give us our walking sticks. After passing through the control point and presenting our entry tickets, we will begin our trek. You will immediately be amazed by the breathtaking landscape, the local flora and fauna, and the herds of alpacas and llamas. We will enjoy incredible views of the majestic Ausangate Mountain.

After a hike of approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, we will reach our destination: Vinincunca, “The Rainbow Mountain” (5,020 m / 16,466 feet). At the summit, we will be able to admire the range of colors that the mountain offers, known locally as Vinincunca, and also enjoy views of the snow-capped Ausangate Mountain, the sacred protector of the Southern region and one of the most revered mountains in the Cusco region. Here, our guide will also explain the geological and mythical significance of the area, and you will have time to explore and take photos.

At the appropriate time indicated by the guide, we will descend the mountain along the same path. Our transport will be waiting to take us back to the village of Cusipata, where we will recharge our energy with a delicious semi-buffet lunch. Finally, we will return to the city of Cusco, with an estimated arrival time of 05:00 PM.

DAY 2: TOUR TO MACHU PICCHU BY TRAIN

Early in the morning, we will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco, depending on the time of our train, and transport you to the Ollantaytambo train station (a 1 hour and 40-minute journey by car). [If the train departs from Poroy, the car ride is 30 minutes, followed by a 3.5-hour train journey.]

Upon arrival at either the Poroy or Ollantaytambo station, we will board the train to the town of Aguas Calientes, also known as Machu Picchu town. During the train ride, we will enjoy spectacular landscapes, towering mountains, rivers, and a variety of flora and fauna typical of the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu town), an agency representative (guide or transfer) will be waiting for us to provide necessary instructions while we head to the bus station. Here, we will board the bus for a 30-minute zigzagging ride up the mountain to the entrance of the majestic Machu Picchu citadel, 2,430 m.a.s.l. (7,970 feet).

Once we descend from the bus, we will meet the group and proceed to the entrance control, where we will present our tickets and identification documents. We will then begin a guided tour of the Machu Picchu citadel, lasting approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes. The guide will share the fascinating history of the Incas, the impressive architecture, and the deep spiritual significance of this place while we explore the most emblematic areas, enjoy panoramic views, and take unforgettable photos of this world wonder.

After the tour, we will take the bus back to Aguas Calientes town, where we can enjoy lunch (not included) at one of the local restaurants, spend free time exploring the town, visit the medicinal hot springs, or browse the artisan market.

In the afternoon, depending on our train schedule, we will head to the train station to board our return train from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo (approx. 2 hours) or Poroy (approx. 3.5 hours). Upon arrival, our agency representative will be waiting to transport us back to Cusco. We will arrive in Cusco around 8:30 PM, closing a day full of discovery and adventure.
